IRS Procedures

Filing Requirements & Status

A dependent must be either a qualifying child or qualifying relative:

Qualifying Child:

  • Must be under age 19 or a student under 24
  • Must live with you for more than half the year
  • Must not provide more than half of their own support
  • Must be related to you

Qualifying Relative:

  • Cannot be your qualifying child or another person's
  • Must have gross income less than $4,400 (2023)
  • You must provide more than half of their support
  • Must be related to you or live with you all year

Retirement Plans & Social Security

For 2023, the contribution limits are:
  • Under age 50: $6,500
  • Age 50 or older: $7,500 (includes $1,000 catch-up)

These limits apply to the total of your traditional and Roth IRA contributions.

Note: Your contribution might be limited based on your income and whether you or your spouse are covered by a retirement plan at work.

Tax Credits

The EITC is a refundable tax credit for low to moderate-income workers:
  • Must have earned income and valid Social Security number
  • Cannot exceed certain income limits based on filing status and number of qualifying children
  • Maximum credit for 2023:
    • No qualifying children: $600
    • 1 child: $3,995
    • 2 children: $6,604
    • 3+ children: $7,430
